サーバとクライアントで、Unixソケットのパスが違っているだけではないですか。

> /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -u root 

/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin --protocol=TCP -u root

でとりあえずはつながるんじゃないでしょうか。
（解決にはなってないか。。）
