ふむ、mysqlのコンパイルだけに失敗するわけですね。
ということで、手元で4.1.7のconfigureを実行してみました。

configureのログの最初の方に
gccとかのチェックをしている部分があるはずなのですが
以下のあたりはどういう出力になっていますか？

私の手元では以下のようになりましたが・・・

checking "C++ compiler version"... "g++ g++ (GCC) 3.3.3 [FreeBSD] 20031106"
